I don't know Bethany. But I do know that she's incredibly open, real and raw - three traits that I appreciate the hell out of. She's talked freely about her open relationship, is a huge proponent of body positivity and is a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ community. She's a rad human and I promise you'll love her interview.
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I'm a New York City-based fitness and lifestyle entrepreneur, and founder of the be.come project. By shifting the focus from how we look to how we feel, my approach to wellness is helping to redefine the intention for why we move. You can catch a live be.come class at Studio B in NYC or join the project online by subscribing for updates (here).
What was the inspiration behind your account?
I can’t say that my account began with an “inspiration”. It’s been my personal instagram since before instagram was cool and my account, like myself, has evolved with time. I first started using my account for fitness when I was teaching the Megaformer workout (think sweaty group pilates on tricked out reformers). I began to post videos of crazy moves I could do on the machine — looked cool to watch, looked impossible to perform.
Once I started to gain somewhat of a following, I realized my videos were pretty much just me showing off. They didn’t utilize my skill set of being an instructor and they felt surface level. So I started to make mini sequences you could do at home. And then I started showing “right way vs wrong way” to do exercises. Which developed into voice overs, and now, I give tutorials on common form questions found in fitness on a weekly basis. I enjoyed sharing usable content so much more than “look at me content” and I suppose this is the inspiration behind my account as you see it today.
If it’s not a #bcmtutorial, my account is inspired by things that are on my heart and mind. I openly speaking about the LGBTQ community, women’s rights, beauty standards, current events and activism. You’ll rarely find me posting a product unless it’s something I’m fully obsessed with. It’s important to me that I talk about real issues and be as authentic as possible on my platform. In fact, I consider it a responsibility.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to start their own brand/business?
When you hit a bump, do something else. Many times I think we tell ourselves we can’t do this until that — ex: “I don’t have business cards so I can’t go to that trade show” This happened to me many times at the beginning and I learned quickly that if I didn’t switch gears nothing would ever get done. I launched the full beta rounds of my business and made triple my goal without even having my website in place! I’m definitely not recommending that you delay your website, but be prepared to march onward without everything being perfect (because trust me, it won’t be perfect).
What do you love most about your job?
Watching people become more confident in the way they carry themselves. I love the awkward girl in class because while my routines look very dancy and ballet inspired, they are actually very manageable movements that most people can do. And the more you do them, the better you can perform them. I often talk about poise and stance and shoulders back and head up and sure, strong movements. It’s beautiful and incredible to watch it manifest in my clients bodies.
What do you love most about yourself?
I love my ability to evolve. To be sure of who I am, what I want and what I believe; but to also allow room to change and grow and well, be.come.
Take us through a day in the life of Bethany. We want all the deets!
Hmmm…which day? My schedule changes constantly and rarely are two days alike…although every day includes:
- cuddles with my dog
- sitting at my vanity slathering organic products on my face (for some reason getting ready standing up is next to impossible for me)
- a homemade smoothie with collagen powder - cherry, frozen banana and almond milk is my fav
- some sort of movement - teaching a private, teaching my classes, filming routines or dancing in my underwear at home
- more cuddles with my dog
- emails emails emails
- showers, yes that was plural
- simple journaling - if I don’t have time to write a full “entry” I note what I did that day in my old-school planner. charting my days helps me feel like time isn’t slipping away
- a phone call with my partner, my momma or my bff
- cuddles with my dog
What's on the horizon for you in 2018?
World domination for the greater good. jk...kind of. But also, launching my app and making fitness attainable, accessible and guilt free for everybody / every body out there.
And lastly, what makes you feel like a kween?
Cuddling with my dog!!! But in all seriousness, I feel like a kween knowing I am instilling a body positive message in the people who surround me. I feel honored to have a platform to speak on and people willing to listen.
